Tell me a little about your home and the people/furballs who live there:
Claire, Bill, our dog Layla, and soon a little bébé live in our historic home in Albany Park, built in 1904. The home is an intriguing combination of architectural styles popular during its construction but probably best described as a slightly undersized American foursquare.
What were some of the difficulties/challenges you faced during the renovation process?
Living with the construction mess for 2.5 months which was a few weeks longer than expected. We are very glad we planned the project during the summer so we could cook outside and escape the dust! Also having to change finishes due to contractual obligations. I had a very clear vision of what I wanted the kitchen to look like and our contractor was flexible with everything but the cabinet vendors who did not offer the color we were initially looking for. Ultimately we are happy with how the cabinets turned out and the white cabinets are probably ideal for resale.

What was your favorite part or feature in the renovation?
Claire: Figuring out the new layout was a fun challenge and the result is completely different from the original kitchen. I also liked choosing the finishes and searching for unique features like the antique stained glass window and exterior door.
Billy: Demo is a very forgiving way to get your hands dirty and learn a great deal about home construction; nothing needs to be perfect! As you take everything apart you essentially learn how it was built and its given me a lot of confidence in tackling on new projects.
Any advice for creating a home you love?
Be patient - Finding the things that make a home and are important to you take time. Repurpose what you already have and what others don’t find use for anymore - family heirlooms, second hand furniture and accents build character in a home. Stay true to your style and don’t let Instagram influencers and Pinterest trends deter you from that. They can be great inspiration but don’t recreate someone else’s home.
What home project are you planning to tackle next?
There’s still a lot to do but we are focusing on what brings the most value first. Our projects this year include adding a bathroom and finishing the basement in an effort to create additional living/guest space. We also plan to update the exterior: adding a fence in the backyard, repainting the porch, and replacing the siding.
